Beginning Jan. 1, 2026, the Air Force will pause all Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) testing to allow for a smooth transition to the updated program.
Testing under the new standards will begin March 1, 2026, with diagnostic-only assessments running through Aug. 31, 2026. Official, scored testing resumes Sept. 1, 2026.
Key Updates to the PFA
The new PFA reintroduces and updates several components:
- Four scored categories (100 points total):
- Cardiorespiratory – 50 points
- Waist-to-Height Ratio – 20 points
- Muscle Strength – 15 points
- Muscle Core Endurance – 15 points
- Body Composition: Measured with the Waist-to-Height Ratio program.
- Two-Mile Run: Required at least once every 365 days, regardless of alternate cardio options.
- Testing Frequency: All Airmen must test every six months, regardless of score.
Testing Procedures
- Active-Duty Airmen may complete body composition up to five days before their PFA.
- Reserve and Guard members may complete it during drill prior to testing.
- Mass Testing Option: Installation commanders may require unit-wide testing twice yearly:
- Cycle 1: September–March
- Cycle 2: March–September
Warfighter’s Fitness Playbook
Alongside the PFA changes, the Air Force is releasing “The Warfighter’s Fitness Playbook”. This adaptive toolkit provides:
- Exercise and fitness guidance
- Nutritional and sleep tips
- Lifestyle management resources
The playbook emphasizes long-term health, stamina, and readiness, supporting Airmen and Guardians in maintaining peak performance.
Leadership Perspective
Gen. David Allvin, Air Force Chief of Staff, highlighted that these changes reflect the “high standards for fitness” necessary to prepare Airmen for today’s missions and future operational demands.
